Punnagai
Desam Fast Facts about 'Punnagai Desam' :

Looks like Vikraman's protegees all have been deeply affected by their
Guru's style. They can't make a movie without his influence. Its no different here. Director Shajahan had ended up making 'Punnagai Desam' look like a summary of sequences of 'Pudhu Vasandham', 'Unnidathil Yennai Koduthaen' & 'Vaanathaipola'. With this own goals, three young men arrive in Chennai. One is a singer (Effect of 'Pudhuvasantham'). The other one (Tarun) is here to marry his cousin, thanks to a promise made long long time ago by his maternal uncle. The maternal uncle turns him away with loads of insults (Effect of 'Vaanathai pola) He doesn't have the heart to return home. So, they unite. Tarun sells food, sundal etc and does every thing for his friends to make their respective dreams come true. A felicitation function is organized for them (Effect of 'Unnidathil Yennaikoduthaen). In that function, the other 2 friends help Tarun realize his dream. The only strengths of this movie is a total absence of vulgarity and a sequence of events that unfold naturally. Though the scenes involving Tarun look like Xerox copies, they are enjoyable. This is Tarun's first Tamil movie. But, he carries the whole movie on his shoulders. Inspite of having a voice that reflects Ajith, at many places, he sounds like a kid. Due to Tarun's domination, the director had messed up with the lives of the three youths, which was the lifeline of this movie. Accepted, everybody turns out to be big achievers, but the way it is told is indigestible. A dialogue later, Hamasavardhan becomes a district collector, & with just one song, Kunal & Dhamu become singing sensations. Hard to believe. Surprise Surprise! The two heroines (Sneha & Preetha) have been used only moderately. Dhamu's mimicry was slightly interesting. Malaysia Vasudevan's advices made sense. Like Holy Grail. When the director himself had resorted to heavy duty Xerox copying, will the music director S.A.Rajkumar be left far behind? Still, a few songs sound melodious. Towards the end of the movie, Tarun gets insulted. An extremely artificial fake scene. Was that supposed to be the sentimental touch? In the climax, its acceptable if star music Inc. conducts a felicitation for Gunal & Dhamu. Why would they conduct one for collector Hamsavardhan too? And, when this function is being telecast live on Sun TV, why would they start continuing their family fights onstage? Such illogical events happen pretty often here. But, inspite of such glaring overlooking, the only thing that holds us seated on our chairs is the very subtle involvement the movie creates.
